Since 1990, Japan has been the destination for Japanese Brazilian immigrants who intended to work in the industrial sector there. This paper examines aspects of the immigrants’ everyday life in the areas of ethnicity, gender and faith experiences within the Roman Catholic Church in Japan. The analysis is based on fieldwork conducted in two phases (2006-2008 and 2009-2010) at eight Roman Catholic parishes. The qualitative research focused on open-ended interviews and participant observation. It concludes that Japanese Brazilian immigrants display a varied array of identity negotiations based on ethnic affiliation, religious beliefs, and gender roles where elements of the host society and the culture of origin are met to produce new identities.
