Throughout history artists have searched for different illusory effects in order to represent reality; several apparatus

were developed which helped to achieve this perfect imitation of nature, culminating in the appearance of the

photograph. Some apparatus were based on what was known as “artificial magic”, used to create illusory effects

whether painted, drawn or recorded. The optical views of Onofre Alsamora, the subject of this study, are included in

this category.

The idiosyncrasy of translucent optical views, designed to be observed through the lens of an optical machine and

with effects which shift according to the recto-verso illumination, determines how they are treated, both at the time

of restoration and of exhibition. A thorough knowledge of the production process and the constituent elements is

therefore essential in order to meticulously select restoration materials and obtain a perfect result.
