Memory is a function of the human mind which helps to keep a record and connect one’s life to ideological coherence. In the same way that people have a memory, so, too, do groups of people which then permits them to work out their history. Christian historical memory has a component in common with the Jewish people. Starting with Jesus Christ, Christianity began to bring in new elements, one of which is the memory of the martyrs, which was born in the earliest prosecutions and which continues today, despite the controversy over the chance coincidence of a mass beatification and parliamentary approval of the “law of historical memory” (2007).

Key words: religion, Catholicism, memorial, tradition, beatification.
