The entire Spanish media sector is witnessing the end of an era characterized
by the confluence of three crises: the economic crisis, the industrial
model crisis, and the crisis of the social role of journalism. Each of the three
crises raises questions regarding the future of journalism and even of the
right to information. There are several problems to solve: people have become
unaccustomed to paying for information since the freebie mentality has
taken hold; institutions and businesses are seeking channels of communication
that lead directly to their target audiences and circumvent bothersome
intermediaries namely, journalists. It remains to be seen who will pay for
future newspapers, which will most probably be digital. However, regardless
of the new context, quality journalism will be necessary since reliable
intermediaries will be necessary. Quality, experience, and depth of information
make for the best product regardless of the format. This is the challenge
facing the media that expect to survive.
