The paper will address the roles of women –and men– in the Nordic Iron Age from approximately 200 AD through the Viking Age. The entire period is one of intense development and innovation. Special attention will be paid to the first part, however, when fundamental changes seem to have taken place. I shall examine the testimony of the saga literature compared to that of Iron Age burials and houses or farm sites. Attention is drawn to an association between women, long houses and long barrows. This relationship is analysed through the concepts of change and maintenance. Further, the distinction between ritual and domestic spheres as arenas for maintenance activities is questioned. Finally I shall touch upon the gendering of central concepts u sed in social theory and their roles in the maintenance of our gender biased pasts.
