From Knight Tirant to Knight Quixote: The Humanistic Criticism of Romances and the Ironic Detachment of Cervantes

Main Article Content

Rafael Beltran

The article examines the three references to Joanot Martorell’s Tirant lo Blanc (The White Knight: Tirant lo Blanc) in
the humanist critique of the 16th-century chivalric romances by Juan de Molina, Luis Vives, and Jerónimo Sempere. It
analyzes how Cervantes both praises and condemns his predecessor. Cervantes criticized as a humanist and he solved
the neo-Aristotelian dilemma of historical likelihood with malicious and deliberate ambiguity.
