The article examines the three references to Joanot Martorell’s Tirant lo Blanc (The White Knight: Tirant lo Blanc) in
the humanist critique of the 16th-century chivalric romances by Juan de Molina, Luis Vives, and Jerónimo Sempere. It
analyzes how Cervantes both praises and condemns his predecessor. Cervantes criticized as a humanist and he solved
the neo-Aristotelian dilemma of historical likelihood with malicious and deliberate ambiguity.
