This paper seeks to reconstruct the mechanisms of family and kinship that helped te make concrete the aspirations of ascending familiar groups lo join the elite of Nueva España. Through the study of marriages, the role of the godfathers and even of remote —but never totally forgotten— bands of kinship, it reveals the ability of the members of the colonial elite te build around themselves a social network which they will soon turn into a tool for the ambition of individuals and families.
