The aim of this article is to analyse the epistemological and aesthetic grounds for
Lovecraft’s theory of cosmic horror. In order to make sense of the celebrated epithet applied to Lovecraft,
describing him as «a literary Copernicus», what is needed is an understanding of the deep connection between
his narratives and scientific images of the world, his distinctions between intellectual assent and aesthetic
belief and between the mundanely gruesome and true cosmic fear, and the metaphysical assumptions that
underpin his late literature.
