On the basis of analysing autobiographism and allusions to the homeland in Virgil’s Bucolics, this article looks in depth at the precedent established by Sannazaro in Garcilaso’s Eclogue III. By tracing personal relationships, the research focuses on the influence that might have been brought to bear by the texts of a number of ‘preceptists’, sometimes published belatedly, through the arrangement of these autobiographical traits by this eclogue. The search has led us to the Kingdom of Naples and the circle of noblemen and poets, as well as to the academies of scholars following on from Villa Mergellina, which formed around the presence of our poet within the Kingdom.
