As technology advances and its consequences become more evident, engineers have an ever-greater responsability to society. This is revealed to a greater or lesser extent in the reports and actions of professional organisations, especially in their deontological codes, and although less clearly, in the degree and diploma curricula of technical universities. After demonstrating this fact, the article weigh ups the raison d'être of the code of ethics in engineering and presents a number of their characteristics, considering their limitations and relationship with values. Lastly, the social and ethical aspects in the formation of technicians are dealt with, and the study of a common case that involves social responsability is presented.
