The geographer's work and new technologies of information and communication. Between digital cartography and virtual geography: an approach

For some years the new technologies of information and the communication —TIC—impact in a more intense way in our lives and in our work. Every time the number of social activities that are not related somehow with technological advances is smaller. Geography has not been waterproof to the new technological developments, but its use in treatment of information, interpretation and production of knowledge apparently is not completely consolidated in the diverse investigation lines. For a scientific discipline that worries to analyze multiple interrelated variables, to try to give bill of forces and actors that structure and define territorial configurations, recent advances can favor better results and bigger strict to the moment to throw interpretations and of proposing alternative in certain contexts. Which is it and will be the incidence of new technologies in the geographer's work? Trying to respond partially this query is approached, among other aspects, the possibilities for the geographer in terms of the handling of the TIC that allow to treat geographical information and the emergence or modification of some concepts —cyberspace— and geographical paradigms, associated to the dynamics of world net of communications —Internet— and especially to the field of virtual geography.
