The expropriation of a working-class neighbourhood: the affection syndrome

Main Article Content

Marc Dalmau Torvà

Through an analysis of the destruction process of a working-class neighbourhood, Colonia Castells in Barcelona, this article tackles the study of the specific house expropriation and its effects on affected communities. It is an approach to what has been called affectation syndrome, a process of community disintegration and class decomposition that intends to produce and legitimate a forced displacement of working-class families of the central urban spaces and to prevent any resistance to capitalist accumulation and appropriation of the city.
