Any professional career at the university level is influenced by the scientific and institutional context in its time and its place. This paper synthesizes the evolution of Ricardo Méndez as a professor and researcher, from their initial studies on industrial location to the proposal of a geography of capitalism and its crisis, or their contributions on territorial development and innovation studies. Also the initial influence of neopositivist geography, the subsequent attachment to marxist structuralism and the increasing importance attached to the neoinstitutional and relational theories.
