Ten years of travels to foreign “lands”: a geographer’s view on the histories that social scientists tell us about themselves

Main Article Content

Marcos Bernardino de Carvalho
An incursion through the disciplinary histories of the social sciences, based on the narratives told by geographers, anthropologists, sociologists and historians about themselves, is developed in this work. These disciplinary histories, usually edited by professional interests, are gathered, evaluated and compared in this work in order to reveal its common interests and common origins, as well as the characters shared by all of them, with special attention to the debates that everyone was involved in the decades of turn of the nineteenth century to the twentieth century. This paper, which summarizes the results of an unpublished research, intends to stimulate dialogues and more flexibility of the still so rigid disciplinary boundaries existent in this field of knowledge.
