The image of the city we seek out to understand here, as well as the proposals of change of this image, from the early twentieth century to the 1940s in the South American city, when the cities look to be adapted to the image of the European cities and, later, of the U.S. cities.

To understand which are the influences, as well in the formal theory as in the urban planning practice in South America, it is necessary to understand which forms are these and how they are appropriated by the architects and town planners. In the 1920s and 1930s, much of the projects presented for South American cities still reflect the traditions of the Beaux-Arts, that we call here the academic style. Only in the 1940s it can be identified influences of the Modern Movement.
