After placing Philo in the context of the Hellenistic trends of his time, this studyfocuses on the exegetical activity of Philo, and two main themes within it: God theSaviour and the living hope of Salvation. As Philo presents it, the biblical traditiondevelops extensively the themes of time and space, which characterize thepresent and the future of the life of the chosen people. Taking the biblical texts,Philo accords value to both the literal and the allegorical meanings and, further, distinguishes the ethical meaning of the historical events as well as of the commandmentsof Moses. He firmly believes that the revelation of God comes to mankindfrom creation, from historical events and from the explicit commandments ofthe law of Moses. Through the symbolism of numerous specific episodes, togetherwith other techniques such as etymology or moving from a literal to an allegoricallevel, Philo highlights for his contemporaries values of a moral nature, by meansof which believers of all times can give thanks to the Saviour who has chosen them to make them free.
