The churches of the prophet John are persecuted by the Roman Empire. They havetheir martyrs. In the face of the immense power of the Empire, the temptationto lose hope is strong. John wants to denounce the Empire and strengthen theChristian identity of his communities, and of all the churches, as well as trust inGod, the authentic ‘Lord’ of history. They are the People of God, with their originin the Old Testament, the true Jews, because they believe in Jesus, the crucifiedand risen Lamb, he is the Messiah. In his book, he shows how it is possible to gofrom the Church Militant, holy and sinful at the same time (Rev. 2–3) to the ChurchTriumphant, where there will no longer either suffering or evil (Rev. 21.1–22.5). Thechurches that keep the commandments of God and the witness to Jesus are calledto be prophetic, embracing the gospel (Rev. 10–11), for it is in this way that they willcontribute to the certain downfall of the Roman Empire (Rev. 17–18).
