This paper proposes an indicator to measure Sustainable Human Development of countries by including in the well-known Human Development Index (HDI) an "ecological weight", capable of measuring the environmental impact (via resources and degradation) generated by a country’s standard of living. We estimate this weight by applying the method of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with another already known indicator, the Ecological Footprint. Results show that the new indicator penalizes countries with high environmental impact and, therefore, hinders future generations’ standard of living, thus bringing new information to the academic debate and public policy formulation.
