Condicionantes Gerais do Descarte de Lixo nas Metrópoles Brasileiras

Um dos principais problemas ambientais decorrentes do atual processo de urbanização é a geração excessiva de lixo residencial e seu descarte inadequado. O presente estudo analisa os condicionantes socioeconômicos e demográficos que influenciam a forma pela qual o lixo é descartado nos domicílios das metrópoles brasileiras, por meio do modelo Logit Multinomial, a partir dos dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios-PNAD. Os principais resultados da pesquisa sugerem que os limites superiores de educação (ensino médio, superior e pós-graduação) reduzem a probabilidade de descarte incorreto do lixo. Outros mitigadores do descarte incorreto do lixo são a renda, gênero e uso da internet. Ademais, o nível de instrução do chefe da família e se o chefe da família é mulher refletem-se nas atitudes dos demais moradores dos domicílios. Esses resultados apontam a necessidade de expandir políticas educacionais, inclusive de educação ambiental, as quais podem promover externalidades positivas e podem contribuir com a disseminação do comportamento pró-ambiental.
