The overall objective was to conduct a critical analysis of the method of Limits of Acceptable Change and Tourism Carrying Capacity in protected areas, with emphasis on the proposal of Cifuentes et al. (1999) as the instrument most applied in Latin America. A literature review of scientific articles on the subject of analysis was performed. As results, it was determined that the Cifuentes´ method focuses on linear, uni-dimensional and partial features, it does not consider homeostasis and skip zoning, which makes an easy operationalization but values generated are heuristics. It is suggested to strengthen the method with the inclusion of social and economic aspects to integrate the three dimensions of sustainability, and incorporate the area of influence within the integrative analysis ANP in tourism planning.
