Institutional use of language in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands: state of the art

Main Article Content

Esperança Munar i Pascual

This article aims to present the changes in linguistic regulations in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands and provide a brief description of institutional use of language, in the context of changes to the role and treatment of Catalan, specific to the Balearic Islands, due to the recent approval of the so-called Agreement on Bilingualism, in February 2024. Three stages may be identified in institutional language use, which, in practical terms, correspond to the following terms of office: the initial stage, which includes the first and second terms (from the promulgation of the Statute of Autonomy in 1983 to 1991); the stage of consolidation of Catalan for institutional use (second to tenth terms, from 1991 to 2023) and the current stage of the eleventh term (from February 2024).
