On the frustrated approval of a new Autonomous Statute for the Region of Murcia (2019-2021) and the treatment of the indigenous linguistic heritage (Murcian and Valencian/Catalan of the Carche area)

Main Article Content

Ángel Custodio Navarro Sánchez

This article analyses the context of the approval by the Regional Assembly of Murcia, in April 2019, of a Project to reform the Murcian Statute that further reinforced the Murcian identity, and referred to the indigenous linguistic heritage, and a minimum but definite idea of protection and recognition for it. However, in December 2021, the vicissitudes of Murcian policy caused the text to stall and ultimately not be accepted. Even the Bureau of the Spanish Congress of Deputies has ended up accepting this withdrawal, although appeals on the grounds of unconstitutionality have been filed against it, so the subject may yet have a new turn. With regard to the worth of the material in terms of linguistic matters, all its aspects are described and related to the requirements of the Constitution (Articles 3.2 and 3.3) and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, in the Region of Murcia, despite the fact that, currently, they are not being implemented.
