The precepts that underpin the European Higher Education Area are based on teaching and learning models which support the acquisition of a set of competences. The innovative approach that we propose is the definition and subsequent implementation of rubrics to assess teamwork as a transversal competence (TC).
The scope of the project is considerable insofar as it affects the entire offering of bachelor’s degrees taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona: namely, the three degrees Fine Arts, Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Property, and Design. This article reports on the results of our research, which had two main goals: first, to introduce the TC teamwork within the framework of these fine arts degree courses and to design a suitable rubric assessment model for this; and second, to conduct a pilot test to evaluate the effectiveness of the project, assess the results and consider possible improvements in its design and implementation. Beyond this study there are also plans to implement the model in all the subjects taught in the Faculty.
The development of the project shows how the teaching teams' collaborative work strengthened, improving the results. The researchers also observed the development of an interesting dynamic of cohesion within the student group, where teamwork encouraged commitment and responsibility between team and group members in relation to the class as a whole.
In order to continue introducing and consolidating this assessment system, we will need to establish a faculty procedure that can manage the system and ensure that it operates effectively.
