Neological lexicography from the 19th century until the present day

The work presents a proposal to divide the historical events of the Italian dictionaries of neologisms into three phases: (1) the first phase, which lasts up until the beginning of the twentieth century, is that of puristic dictionaries. Its main objective is the registration of neologisms either in order to propose their cancellation from the Italian language or to prevent their entry; (2) the second phase is that of Panzini and Migliorini, up to the Sixties. Its objective is to record the words that have the greatest chance of settling in and put down roots in the Italian language; (3) the third phase, which starts in the late eighties of the twentieth century, has as its main objective the registration of neologisms while they are formed, regardless of future forecasts. The latter category includes the neologic repertoires that closely follow the political events of the so-called Second Republic, especially around the 1992-1994 two-year period.
