In the Middle Ages the study of the functioning of the brain did not belong to a specific branch of knowledge. However, the approach developed at the medical schools presented a peculiarity: the need that its theoretical framework sustained both the normal and the pathological. This article will analyse this peculiarity, real or rhetorical, paying special attention to the epistemological value that scholastic medicine granted to the subjectivity of the mad person.
