This paper is about the life of Josep Ferrer i Guàrdia and his depth of professional experience. The eldest of a family of farmers from Alella, north of Barcelona, he started his journey in his hometown. He later travelled to Australia, where he succeeded as a specialised horticulturist and was awarded a gold medal by the Australian Minister of Agriculture himself, before being asked by his brother to come back home. At the request of his brother, Ferrer i Guàrdia took care of a country house named Can Matas. After the Tragic Week confrontations in 1909, he finally moved to Llançà, where he acquired a new country house once owned by the Cremadells, a noble family from Roussillon. It was there that he consolidated his specialisation in growing fruit trees, vegetables and flowers, especially focusing on dianthuses.
