After the Roman province of Egypt was established, the spread of the Egyptian symbols current in Egyp became even more marked in the Roman iconographic repertoire elsewhere in the Empire. This paper focuses on Egyptian-inspired animal representations in Roman private and public spaces. After an overview of the Nilotic leitmotif, some aspects of the appearance and depiction of anatids, crocodiles and hippopotamuses in the creation of the Roman representation of Egypt are explored. This type of analysis will provide a better understanding of the importance of these emblems in Roman ideology and their iconographic treatment outside the Roman province of Egypt.
