The books of a Catalan soldier in 1600s Naples
Juan de Pinós was a lesser member of the Catalan nobility who settled in Italy as a soldier of King Philip III of Spain. The inventory of his books, which survives in the Archivio di Stato di Napoli, sheds light on the world of soldier-poets and musicians of the Spanish Golden Age. It also gives an insight into life in the Neapolitan Spanish quarter (the Quartieri Spagnoli), its people and institutions, and in general illustrates the role of the Spanish Habsburg army in early modern globalization.
