The assistance network for Hispanic communities in Palermo, 16th and 17th centuries
In the present article, I will discuss the question of the assistance provided to people from the crowns of Castile and Aragon who had come to the city of Palermo in the 16th and 17th centuries. For this purpose, I will focus on the welfare policies of the different Hispanic “national corporations” that were present in the city – the chapel and confraternity of the Virgin of Guadalupe of the Castilian and Biscayan nations, the church of Santa Eulalia of the Catalan
nation, and the chapel and confraternity of the Soledad of the Spanish nation – while also considering the role played by the institutions of the Crown and of the municipal government. The ultimate aim is to explore the specific needs, plurality of composition, and nature of the community that made up the Hispanic population in the capital of the kingdom of Sicily.
