The article provides a critical overview of a research project that examines the politics of place naming and the use and perception of bilingual signs in minority areas. It offers a summary of the principal theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches used in the project, and highlights the challenges encountered during the study. The article seeks to help researchers design their own projects on place name politics and the role of place names in space-related identity building.
