The Phoenix, a fantastic bird, is one of the most luring images within the Death of the King. Its properties coincide along with the ideological frame of royal decease in Modern Ages. To emphasize such a relation and waiting for the time to attempt a deeper approach, we are analysing the symbolical programme in the catafalque reared at the cathedral of Lima for Charles II ‘s obsequies. Both the conception of its building, unlike other pyramid mounds, and the rich of symbolical elements make this sample one of the most interesting catafalques from Spanish-American colonial times.
