The article offers a comparative look at the processes of transition to democracy experi- enced by Chilean and Spanish societies in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on audio-visual sources. The paper reflects on the possibilities that these kinds of sources (both fictional and non-fictional videos) bestow upon historians, who can use them as primary sources and as pedagogical tools. This idea is emphasized in the article through the example of the Spanish election of 1977 and the Chilean referendum of 1988, showing how, by using videos, we can achieve a broader vision of the diverse political viewpoints. In this case, the audio-visual sources show strong similarities between the two countries, where the opposition parties were willing to move forward while the heirs of the dictatorial past were unwilling to change.
