Fausto Gruzat and Góngora was one of the many younger sons of the noble families of Navarre who sought their own path far from their homelands during the final years of the 17th century. In his case, Fausto, despite having started a military carreer, soon moved to the field of commerce, where he forged close ties with the New Hispanic market and with the Tagle family. The lalter led him to the Court of the Philippines, where he demonstrated his skilis and education, taking the Governorate into the new century and initiating important economic and institutional reforms.
