La llegada del azúcar a las zonas ganaderas. El caso de Puerto Príncipe

This paper analyzes the struggles for land in Puerto Príncipe province. We are interested in the transformation process undergone by the agriculture of this province following the establishment of sugar as well as the conflicts between stakeholders in expanding the areas for the cultivation of sugar cane and cattle ranchers at odds over the control of land. Without attempting a comparison with the rest of the island, we try to establish the dissimilar - or similar – characteristics of the process of appropriation of land acquired in the central region, with a different economic commitment -livestock- which generated differing applications and domains of land where common farms were dominant feature in the agrarian structure.
