Entre liturgia y materialidad: Estudio de un códice iluminado del monasterio de Alcobaça (ALC. 252)

En este artículo se presenta el estudio de un misal iluminado procedente del monasterio de Alcobaça (BNP, Alc. 252). El análisis del contenido litúrgico y de la materialidad del códice, incluyendo aquí la iluminación y la encuadernación, así como el estudio comparativo con otros manuscritos procedentes del mismo monasterio, permitirán confirmar su origen en el scriptorium alcobacense, precisar su datación, integrarlo en su contexto de producción y de uso(s), y tener en cuenta la evolución de las circunstancias litúrgico-materiales del mismo.

Catarina Fernandes Barreira, Instituto de Estudos Medievais
A native of Lisbon, Catarina Fernandes Barreira holds a PhD in Art Sciences from the University of Lisbon and, since 2011 has been a researcher in the Institute for Medieval Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon. Her doctoral research, undertaken as a fellow of the FCT, concerned the thematic analysis of gargoyles in gothic and late-gothic buildings in Portugal. Later, courtesy of a post-doctoral fellowship also sponsored by FCT her work focussed on the illuminated manuscripts of Alcobaça in the 14th and 15th centuries, in a project completed in July 2017. Presently she is conducting investigations into the illuminated liturgical codices produced in the scriptorium of Alcobaça between the end of the 12th and the 16th centuries premised on contexts of production, circulation and use(s). She is the Principal Investigator of the project Cistercian Horizons. Studying and characterizing a medieval scriptorium and its production. Alcobaça. Local identities and liturgical uniformity in dialogue (ref. PTDC/ART-HIS/29522/2017) and also of the project Books, rituals and space in a Cistercian nunnery. Living, praying and reading in Lorvão, 13th – 16th centuries (refª PTDC/ART-HIS/0739/2020) both financed from National Funds by the FCT. Between 2015 and 2019 she has been coordinator of the research group Images, Texts and Representations and between 2019 and 2021 IEM’s stand-in Vice Director. She is a member of the Centre for the Study of Religious History (Catholic University of Portugal) and, between 2011 and 2021, visiting adjunct professor in the Superior School of Education and Social Sciences, IPL.
Conceição Casanova, Facultad de Ciencias y Tecnología
Conceição Casanova has extensive experience in leading conservation and restoration teams, supervising research projects and MS and PhD students in the area of conservation and restoration of book and works of art on paper, and she has been recognized by prizes and awards for several publications. She holds a PhD in Conservation and Restoration Theory, History, and Techniques from the Sciences and Technology Faculty, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, plus a post-graduate degree in Conservation Studies from the Camberwell College of Arts, London University, as well as an Art History Degree from the Humanities Faculty, Universidade do Porto. She has been a consultant to institutions such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Direcção Geral dos Monumentos Nacionais, director of the Conservation & Restoration Departments of the Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa (1989-1998), the Arquivos Nacionais, Torre do Tombo (1999-2004), and the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (2005-2015), where she has been a researcher since 2012, plus the Museums of the Universidade de Lisboa. Currently, she is assistant professor and vice-president of the Ph.D. Doctoral Programme in the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, and a member of the Executive Board of the Conservation & Restoration Department of Sciences and Technology Faculty of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
João Veiga, Facultad de Ciencias y Tecnología
Native of Lisbon, João Pedro Patrício da Silva Veiga holds a bachelor’s degree in art history, from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon. Since 2021 has been a researcher in the Institute for Medieval Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon.
In the Past he collaborated in some researched projects, such as the “Cistercian Horizons research project. Studying and characterizing a medieval scriptorium and its production: Alcobaça. Dialogues between local identities and liturgical uniformity (PTDC/ART-HIS/29522/2017)” and “TechNetEMPIRE - Technical-Scientific Networks in the Formation of the Built Environment in the Portuguese Empire, 1647-1871 (PTDC/ART- DAQ/31959/2017)”
Presently he is on the Master's in History of the Arts of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University Nova of Lisbon, with the Master's thesis registered under the title "The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum's Medieval Collection: The so-called Virgin of the Baker" under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Alicia Miguélez Cavero, professor at NOVA FCSH and integrated member of the IEM, and co-supervision of Dr. Lucretia Kargère, Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York. The Master's Thesis also has the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, through the conservator Luísa Sampaio.
