Francisco Xavier de Olóriz, the last great chaplain in the Royal Palace of Valencia

Emilio Callado Estela

The former Jesuit priest Francisco Xavier de Olóriz (Valencia, 1730 – † Valencia, 1814) is well known because of his condition of prudent critic. He was conscious of Spanish cultural backwardness during the 18th century, but simultaneously suspicious of those enlightened men who could threaten the country traditional values. His journey through Europe and his associated publishing projects were closely linked to such attitude. Nevertheless, his biography was incomplete. Olóriz’s life was marked by his post heading the Great Chapel in the Royal Palace of Valencia. As the last chaplain, he was opposed to Chapel twilight in order to defend a set or rights called in question for everyone.
