Disciplinamiento católico e identidad de género. Mujeres, sensualidad y penitencia en la España moderna

Main Article Content

Mª Luisa Candau Chacón
This work analyzes models for reform and correction specifically aimed to women’s education in Early Modern Times. It is centered in the message from the Council of Trent and it takes the exaltation of the Sacrament of Penance as a vehicle for disciplinary formulas. It chooses the myth of Mary Magdalene as a model of a repented sinner and a holy woman and it highlights, among all successful plays, «La Magdalena» from Malon de Echaide. It finishes with real Early Modern Seville sketches, with women with conflictive lives and far from the model: sinners and whores, like the supposed Magdalena. Its research sources are the judiciary processes of the diocesan Church.
