Criteria to determine the written form of toponyms

Based on work carried out in the Office of Onomastics, within the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the author of this article analyses the criteria and various factors (etymology, ancient documentation, written tradition and pronunciation) taken into account when establishing the written form of toponyms in accordance to the current linguistic rules and with the aim of achieving standardisation in their use.
