Language Uses in Commercial Establishments in Barcelona (Ofercat 2012)

This article presents a summary of the results obtained from the study of language uses at commercial establishments in Barcelona (Ofercat on commerce in Barcelona 2012), conducted by the Directorate-General for Language Policy and the Consortium for Language Normalisation. The data shows the use of Catalan in signage and customer service in shops in Barcelona, comparing the latest figures with those for the year 2005. For the first time, moreover, the percentage of establishments run by immigrants is given, this being one of the principal variables that influence in the evolution of language use in commerce.
