Discovering the languages of immigration: concealment, prejudice and other misunderstandings

Research into the linguistic diversity generated by immigration to Catalonia encounters several problems. We review some in this paper: the concept of language as a cultural construct, the linguistic ideologies of researchers and speakers which often conceal linguistic knowledge, the lack of consistency between statistically adequate quantitative data, and the mechanisms that may bias interviews.
