Iconographic themes retrieval in Internet art image databases

Reviews the indexing systems used by 30 databases covering fine arts and available over the Internet. Procedures for subject analysis and retrieval are compared: ICONCLASS, thesauri, natural language classifications, subject headings, simple descriptors, free text.
