Overview of the situation of library and information science studies in Spain in recent years and perspectives for the future of education in this sector. The article reviews the most important events that have occurred: official recognition of studies for a 3-year university level degree and of the centers that impart them; the reformation of programs of study according to the
Law of University reform; and the creation of the 5-year university degree. In order to advance the development of research in library and information science and create a more positive public image of the profession, Spanish library science education in the future must move towards European homologation and a strengthening of its programs of study.
