Catalonia or the republic of libraries: from its «natural condition» to cooperation

A state of the art on library cooperation —national library, academic, public and special libraries— in Catalonia, beginning with the enactment of the law on the Catalan library system in 1993 and covering through 2007. Using Thomas Hobbes’ social pact theory as a starting point, the author offers historical and terminological notes; the evolution of cooperation in relation to organizational patterns –systems, networks and consortia—, the changes to existing activities, the advantages and disadvantages, and finally, future trends.
