The aim of this paper is to explain a bizarre image describred by Ammianus Marcellinus where a Saracen cuts enemy’s throat and drinks his blood at the gates of Constantinople in 378. In order to do this we contextualize this episode into the history of Saracens, Germanics, Scythians and other peoples of the steppes.
