The present study contains a new critical edition and an annotated translation of the Hittite ritual CTH 419 (“Ritual of Royal Substitution”). After a brief introduction including the list of cuneiform fragments and an updated bibliography, the edition of the text includes a standardized cuneiform version together with a normalized transcription, the critical apparatus and a literal translation with a commentary in footnotes. The purpose of the ritual is “the removal of the threat implied in an evil omen” against the Hittite king. This aim is only achieved with the investment of a man as a substitute for the king, and the final killing of this substitute.
