Han pasado dos décadas desde que Philip T. Hoffman, Gilles Postel-Vinay y Jean-Laurent Rosenthal (en adelante HPR) escribieran su libro Priceless Markets: The Political Economy of Credit in Paris, 1660-1870 (2000). En él los citados autores demostraban, a través del estudio de contratos notarizados en la capital francesa du-rante los siglos xvii, xviii y xix, la existencia de un mercado dinámico de préstamos entre particulares que permitía la asignación de un gran número de recursos crediti-cios fuera del circuito bancario.
