Woman in the Dunes by Hiroshi Teshigahara in 1964 was worth enough to won over the Western critics because of its artistic form of the eternal allegory of the human being, the representation of a modern Sisyphus myth. The following paper tries to shed light on the meaning of this work through an analysis about the different conflicts of the individual poised in the homonymous novel by Kōbō Abe in 1962. The film is a materialization of Abe’s philosophic universe and should be read as a double allegory that is favoured by the ambiguous language: as a reference to Japan after the Second World War and as a universal and timeless symbol.
