On the linguistic ascription of the Hephthalites

This paper shows a state of the research about the discussion on the language of the Hephthalites. The aforesaid question is still open nowadays and it is subject to multiple interpretations. Here we present the available evidence on their writing system and the various theories about the origin of their language, which vary from an Altaic to an Iranian origin, without reaching a consensus.
