χάριζ and the ethics of reciprocity that this concept involves are essential to understand Ajax, the first Sophoclean tragedy which is still extant. In particular, we propose a reflexion about the use of this term in v. 522 and a new reading, which involves a revaluation of the scene and a better comprehension of the rhetorical effect that underlies in the passage and, in general, along Tecmessa’s speech, to which this verse belongs.
