As an emerging product of modernity, sport is established through the attempt to split the game/player relationship, from the perspective that its strong regulation is the element capable of determining its identity. In view of this, the value given to obedience to the rule is assumed to be unquestionable, allowing the player's relationship with the rule to be evaluated based on sportsmanship, gamesmanship and cheating. We argue in this essay that such conceptions can be distinctly understood in the light of formalist, conventionalist and interpretive currents of philosophy, from which the conception of the imperiousness of rules can be questioned. From this, we present how the multiple conceptions about sportsmanship, gamesmanship and cheating can interfere in the Sport Pedagogy field, especially in the youth sports training by game-centered approaches, as well as in youth competitions modified in their rules.
